French Island, WI

Stevie Ray, 72, of French Island, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2026. He was born on April 30, 1954, in La Crosse to William and Donna (Nichols) Ray.

Steve discovered his love of drumming at a young age, and music remained his passion throughout his life. He attended the University of Wisconsin, where he played drums in the band and earned a degree in Pre-Med. Over the years, Steve shared his musical talents as a member of numerous bands and performed at countless events. He especially enjoyed using his talents to support and give back to police officers, firefighters, and members of the military.

Steve had a passion for adventure and enjoyed pursuing a variety of interests throughout his life. He earned his pilot’s license and loved flying. He also earned his PBR (Professional Bull Riders) jacket, an accomplishment he was proud of. In his younger years, Steve was a competitive snowmobiler whose talents earned him recognition, including being featured on magazine covers. He became known as “Thundercat Ray,” a nickname that reflected his adventurous spirit and love of the sport.

Outside of music and his many adventures, Steve enjoyed spending time outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved camping and riding his Harley. He was also very proud of his Scottish heritage and enjoyed sharing that pride with those around him.

Above all, Steve cherished his family and friends. He will be remembered for his love of music, adventurous spirit, generous heart, appreciation for the outdoors, and the many lives he touched through his talents and friendships. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Steve is survived by his wife, Lynn; children, Jessie Ray, Nate Ray, and Jason (Nichole) Mahlum; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Roxy, Julie, and Billy Ray, Jr.; and mother-in-law, Shirley Rhodes.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, William “Bill” Ray, Sr., and Donna (Nichols) Ray.

You will be missed, Sunshine.
